Food hygiene courses

There are a variety of different courses available for people working in food businesses. While it is not compulsory to have attended such courses, it is necessary to be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient knowledge to undertake your work safely. Food hygiene training courses are an effective means of obtaining and updating this knowledge. 

Health and safety courses are also available for specific topics and general health and safety issues. For people who find it difficult to arrange time off work there are electronic and distance learning options available. 

The foundation course in food hygiene

A six hour course usually completed in one day. This is an ideal introduction to food hygiene for all food handlers and can be tailored to suit the individual client’s needs. Candidates who successfully complete a multiple-choice questionnaire are awarded the Foundation in Food Hygiene Certificate.

Refresher training for food hygiene

A half-day course strongly recommended for anyone who completed the Foundation Course in Food Hygiene more than three years ago. It is aimed at ensuring that food handlers are kept up to date with the latest developments and good practices. Candidates who successfully complete the course receive a certificate.

The intermediate food hygiene course

Designed for supervisors or managers who require further training in food hygiene. It comprises of 18 hours of training and candidates who achieve at least 60% in a two hour multiple-choice exam are awarded the Intermediate Food Hygiene Certificate.

The advanced food hygiene certificate

This is the highest qualification awarded by the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) and the RIPHH (Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene) and the course focuses on the responsibility of management in ensuring food safety.

Hazard analysis – principles and practice

This is usually a two day course and is designed for supervisors and managers who are required to carry out hazard analysis as part of their duties. Successful candidates are awarded an accredited qualification in Hazard Analysis.
