We’ve spoken to local women and men who currently work in a variety of roles within the care sector across north London.  They’ve spoken honestly to us about how they got started, what they enjoy about their work, what they think makes a good care sector employee and what a successful and fulfilling career looks like to them. Thank you to all of the people who gave us their time to share their stories and tell us why they are proud to care.

Richard Buckman - Centre Manager, Rosa Morison Day Centre, Your Choice Barnet

Richard is the day centre’s manager at the Rosa Morison Day Centre, managed by Your Choice Barnet, catering for people aged over 18 years who live with profound physical and multiple learning disabilities. Most come from the borough of Barnet but the centre also accepts referrals from other north central London boroughs. Richard says its users are some of the most vulnerable people in society who depend on their carers for all their needs.  These range from being positioned on a chair or beanbag, to help with eating, to toilet and personal care needs and help to do fun activities, such as taking a dip in the hydrotherapy pool or using the eye-tracking technology to select music.

Richard has been working at the centre for nearly 28 years, except for a brief stint as manager for another centre run by Your Choice Barnet. Eventually becoming a day centre’s manager.

Rosa Morison aims to maintain people’s mobility and keep them as socially engaged as possible. Richard says that if you want to do a job like his, you need to be physically fit and able to see beyond people’s physical and learning difficulties to help them get the best out of their lives.

Semone Drewitt-Wilson - Islington care co-ordinator for London Care

Semone arranges about 2,300 domiciliary care visits per week, door-to-door across Islington borough, from her office in Haringey. She started working in the care sector after helping to look after her terminally ill grandfather. Semone is currently working towards her NVQ level 5 in care management, which London Care is funding. In future, she would like to open her own care home.

Katherine Young - Field care supervisor, Link Care, Barnet

Katherine looked after her sister when she was younger and after 10 years, working in retail decided to try something different using her combined caring and managerial experiences.  Field care supervisor Katherine Young says caring was always part of her life as she grew up with her mum looking after her sister, who had long-term health issues. After working as a retail manager for 10 years, Katherine wanted to try something different and decided to apply for a position as a care assistant. Link Care, Barnet felt her background and managerial experience made her more suited for the field care supervisor position, which she successfully secured in November 2018.

Christina Omooseti - Training facilitator at Priscilla Wakefield House nursing care home in Haringey

Christina is the first person Priscilla Wakefield House staff meet, as one of her roles is to carry out inductions for new starters. She enjoys getting to know everyone, including carers, nursing staff, laundry staff and kitchen staff. The care home employs 163 people over three floors. Christine helps train them on all the different systems they would need to use and organises all their internal and external training, which is tailored to their role and level of experience.

Nosi Avery – Human resources manager at Priscilla Wakefield House nursing care home in Haringey

From nursing staff and healthcare assistants to kitchen and housekeeping staff, HR manager Nosi Avery is responsible for recruiting the right people to work at Priscilla Wakefield House in Haringey. She started in admin as a receptionist, then went on to study for a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualification in HR before moving into her current role.
